“Surrey Manor” Echoes Edwin Lutyens’ Arts & Crafts Homes

“Surrey Manor” is an Arts & Crafts inspired home created for Broughton by Chris Hough of 3rd Dimension Design.

Widely regarded as the greatest British architect of the 20th Century, Edwin Lutyens was a master at adapting traditional architectural styles in practical, yet unexpected ways. His lovely homes, found primarily in the English county of Surrey, inspired architect Chris Hough of 3rd Dimension Design to create a five bedroom, three living area Ensemble home for Colleyville’s Broughton neighborhood. As with all unique Ensemble homes, it has been given a name appropriate to its origins, “Surrey Manor”.

Of the tasteful design recently completed, developer David Bagwell remarked, “Architecture in our neighborhoods follows historic precedent, but it isn’t stodgy. We believe, as did Lutyens, that ‘one of the elements of beauty is surprise’ and encourage architects to innovate and interpret the historic archetype that they reference within the norms of that particular style.”

Like Lutyens’ Arts & Crafts homes, “Surrey Manor” harmonizes defining elements of its architectural provenance with the times. Guests pass across a broad terrace and then onto the front stoop through a deconstructed arch reminiscent of Lutyens’ masterworks Overstrand Hall and March Court. Beyond the front door, the interior of “Surrey Manor” is as welcoming as its exterior. The two-story foyer organizes the first level. A drawing room lies to the left, with the dining room to the right. Conveniently situated beyond the dining room through a butler’s pantry is the kitchen. Stairs in the entry foyer elegantly ascend to the second level. Ahead, beyond the stairs, one glimpses the vaulted great room illumined by natural light admitted through dormer windows, and French doors afford a view of the rear yard landscape. The Great Room connects to the kitchen and the media room nearby and separates the master and guest suites located on opposite sides of the rear of the house. Up the grand staircase are three bedrooms, three baths, a game room, and computer work area. Garage provision for four cars satisfies the needs of an active family. Rich landscaping and the verdure of Broughton establish this inspired design as an exceptional value both in use and upon resale.

Through Ensemble, Bagwell offers one-of-a-kind house and landscape plans with all exterior materials pre-approved for immediate building on one of his accommodating lots. Or, his associate Cindy Brazil will engage one of the notable Ensemble architects to translate the vision of a homebuyer or speculative builder into a home composed specially for them.

“No doubt, beauty in our surroundings enhances the quality of our lives. However, today’s muscle houses lack the compositional discipline necessary for us to find beauty in them,” Bagwell insists. “In our developments on the other hand, through careful coordination Ensemble architects and builders produce richly appointed homes with subtle styling and proper proportion. These homes imbue our neighborhoods with the timeless qualities of picturesque residential areas of the past and a sense of place that the heart knows.”
